It was founded in 1896 in the small town of Tamdhu (“little dark hill”) and produces distinguished Highland Malt Whisky within it 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills. Water comes from the Tamdhu burn, which flows through woodland into the Spey. The in 1881 founded Distillery Bunnahabhain is located in the north-east of Islay, exactly situated at the mouth of River Margadale at the  Sound of Islay, three up to four miles north of Port Askaig. The distillery buildings are constructed around a courtyard. The whisky production started with two stills, from 1963 on with 2 wash stills and 2 spirit stills. In contrary of other Islay Malt Distilleries, at Bunnahabhain they distil a Single Malt Whisky without the typical „Islay Character“.
