Marala Roshan
Born on the 18th November 1812 in Rawalpindi, India, comes to London as a baby with her parents, where her father Abbay works as a tea specialist for the very wealthy tea merchant Meghnad Kapur. When Marala's father arrives home one day with an injured boy called Simon, she helps her mother Harsha to care for the young German, who fortunately speaks English. An intense pen friendship that lasts for years eventually develops into love. But out of deep gratitude and a sense of duty to her parents, she fulfils their promise of marriage to Meghnad Kapur and marries this old man as his third wife. Responsible, caring, understanding, generous, loving, but also courageous and consistent would probably be qualities that Kapur's two other wives, Ranjana and Lali, would ascribe to Marala.

Cullum Milton
Born on February 28th 1808 in Chicago. A charismatic, athletic young man, works for Henderson Transatlantic and is an officer on the merchant ship "Norfolk", where Simon Brown meets him on the voyage from New York to Canton. A deep friendship develops between the two young men and they experience thrilling adventures together. When Simon is seriously injured by a musket shot in Madagascar and left behind alone, it is Callum Milton who leaves the "Norfolk" again to search for Simon. At great risk and effort, he succeeds in finding and rescuing him. Shortly before the end of their journey, the "Norfolk" is caught in a violent storm. While Simon is ordered to stand in for an injured helmsman, it is Callum's job to cut a dinghy that has been torn loose and is thrashing back and forth on the deck completely free so that it disappears into the water and cannot cause any more damage. As he does so, the noose of a line catches around Callum's boot, pulls him off his feet, his arms whirl around in the air looking for support, his helpless, desperate gaze clings to Simon and in an instant he disappears into the house-high, roaring waves of the Atlantic.
Thomas Baxter
geboren 30.10.1788 in Stirling, Schottland.
William Scott
Born on April 1st 1790 in Bridge of Allan, Scotland, married to Eleanor. The tall, wiry Scott served as a highly decorated captain in the Scots Guards during the Napoleonic Wars in the British Army. He was awarded the highest French honour, the "Legion of Honour", by Napoleon Bonaparte, through Wellington, for saving the life of a senior French officer. As Brodrick Muir, one of his comrades, described him to Simon, "On the one hand he is stubborn, unyielding and stolid, but on the other hand he is also assertive, persistent and fair. If you ask me, William Scott was one of the best soldiers in Wellington's army. Look around you, Simon, any one of us here would go through fire for him. I'm quite sure of that."
